What is a
gestation crate?

A gestation crate is a metal crate where sows (female, adult pigs) are kept throughout their pregnancy. These crates are a mere 6.6 feet long x 2 feet wide – so small that the pigs can’t turn around, or even lie down properly. These pigs will spend most of their lives in one of these cages.

Gestation crates are widely cited by animal rights activists as one of the least animal welfare-friendly practices in the pork industry, and yet across Canada pig farmers continue to use them and cause unnecessary suffering.

The Greenfield
difference

Greenfield is proud to be gestation crate-free, using an advanced open pig housing system, where pigs have the freedom to move, socialize, and even play.

Our sows spend only 30 days in crates: during their farrowing stage while nursing crates and in the breeding stage. This is a precaution to keep the piglets and pigs safe during these stages

We believe all animals should have the freedom to move, play, and avoid unnecessary suffering.

The Greenfield Housing System

Time spent in crates: 30 days.

Loose Housing System

Time spent in crates: 63 days

Conventional Housing System

Time spent in crates: 141 days
